City staying away from litigation over Cowlitz Tribe casino project

One community is staying out of litigation that seeks to stop the Cowlitz Tribe from opening a casino in Washington.

The city of La Center could join the case at a later date, Mayor Jim Irish said. But he said there's nothing to fight about now.

“We don’t know what we’d appeal it on,” Irish told The Columbian.

On Monday, Clark County, the city of Vancouver, two property owners, an anti-gaming group and four non-Indian card clubs sued the Bureau of Indian Affairs. They say the agency failed to consider the environmental impacts of the proposed Cowlitz Casino Resort and ignored the U.S. Supreme Court decision in Carcieri v. Salazar.

The lawsuit was filed in federal court in Washington, D.C.
